See Madama Butterfly At NY’s Metropolitan Opera

Oct 30, 2017 Dr Kristina Nelson

This winter, opera lovers who will be in NYC can experience a visually stunning masterpiece filled with award-winning music and beautiful scenery at NYC’s Metropolitan Opera. Madama Butterfly, Puccini’s operatic masterpiece, will be performed from November 2nd to March 16th, and this popular classic has been a hit since it first re-appeared at the Metropolitan Opera back in 2006.

An Operatic Masterpiece

Playing the title role of the beautiful geisha, Madama Butterfly, whose love turns tragic is Hui He and Ermonela Jaho, both returning performers in this role. Pinkerton, the geisha’s insensitive, self-centered lover, will be played by both Roberto Aronica and Luis Chapa. Also alternating as conductors of the opera are Jader Bignamini and Marco Armiliato.

Viewers will be captivated by the beautiful costumes and stunning visual presentation of Madama Butterfly as they witness the main character, Madama Butterfly, a young Japanese geisha who falls in love with one of her clients, Pinkerton, an American naval officer, and hopes her relationship will be one of long-lasting reciprocal love. However, underlying Madama Butterfly’s desire for love and lifelong companionship is the idea of culture and sexuality, which are undercut by the beauty of Puccini’s score.

Set in the backdrop of Nagasaki, a Japanese port city at the turn of the 19th century, we see the expansion of American interest into Japan, and the way the Japanese were pressured into becoming part of the global community. We witness the cultural clash in the city as well as in the relationship of Madama Butterfly and Pinkerton.
